A year after claiming the District 19-3A team title, the Gatesville boys cross country team did it again at Waco Connally with nearly the identical formula.

John Austin Moreno won the individual title for the Hornets with a time of 17 minutes, 35 seconds. He finished ahead of Robinson’s Michael Echterling and Elijah Gutierrer, while Gatesville’s Jordan Klossner (17:43.3) and Ricardo Romero (17:46.5) placed fifth and sixth, respectivly. The Hornets put seven in the top 20.

Last year, Klossner took second, Romero finished third and Moreno placed fifth.

“We had a pretty good showing,” said Gatesville head coach Brian Edwards. “Robinson had a couple kids we didn’t know about but...I really thought we would win it. The top four kids have been pretty good all year.”

Lorena took second in the team standings, ahead of Robinson and fourth-place Waco La Vega.

The Hornets will advance their top seven runners as a team to the Region III-3A meet Nov. 5 at Humble Atascocita near Houston.  Abate Hennessy (18:27.6), Alex Bermudez (18:39.0) and Hunter Dean (18:58.8) finished 11th, 12th and 17th, respectively.

On the girls side, the Hornets finished third overall but placed three runners in the top 10. The trio, led by Alissa Gonzalez (12:27.2) and her third-place finish, advances to the region meet. Also moving on is Emily Soltow (12:45.2), who finished fifth, and Allyson Epps (13:08.1), who took eighth place.China Spring won the team title, with the Hornets placing third.
