AUSTIN Casey Frazier was thankfully overshadowed the last time he stood on the mound.
The Salado sophomore pitcher walked six batters in the Eagles series-clinching win over Wimberley after walking just five through the Eagles entire district season.
Honestly, it prepared me, Frazier said. It was (my) first start in the varsity playoffs, it gave me a taste of what competition was going to be like and I knew this week, I had to step up if we were going to beat Cuero.
Though Salado won its third-straight run-rule playoff game, Frazier impressively proved hes a quick study, two-hitting the Gobblers in the Eagles 10-0, six-inning Game 1 win at Nelson Field.
The last time out, he was a little uncharacteristically wild, Salado coach Chad Krempin said. That was kind of an odd deal for him, but he came back and threw well for us tonight. They didnt get any runs on the board, so thats the most important thing, we played good defense.
The two teams return to Nelson Field today at noon for Game 2 of the best-of-three area playoff series. Game 3, if necessary, would follow.
Frazier struck out eight through the first four innings and Salados offense took its cue.
The Eagles (29-11) scored three runs in the second and sixth innings and one run in each of the others.
Cole Haag had an RBI single in the first and John Franz hit a bases-clearing, three-run double in the second for a 4-0 Salado lead before Frazier gave up his first hit. Davis Littles RBI single in the third stretch the Eagles lead to 5-0 and Franz scored on a single, a stolen base and back-to-back balks for a 6-0 lead in the fourth. Trey Mohler also scored on a balk the Eagles three-run sixth.
Frazier scored stole home as Kadin Eary was picked off between first and second for Salados 7-0 lead in the fifth, but it was his pitching that set the tone.
Probably the exact opposite of last week, Frazier said. You have those days when you go out there and you couldnt hit a wall if you wanted to. Then, you have nights like tonight where you could throw whatever pitch, any count, any place and youre just feeling good.
