Having 6-foot-3 post Glynna Johnson controlling the interior already makes Gatesville a hard team to defend.
The Hornets make it even harder when fellow senior Kaitlin Poe is hot from the outside, as was the case at the Comanche Tournament. Poe made 10 3-pointers in the tournament, including four in the third-place game Saturday to lead Gatesville to a 55-35 win over Cisco.
Poe, who finished with 14 points, was named to the all-tournament team.
"It starts from the outside in," Gatesville coach Chris Carroll said. "It's hard to guard us when she does what she does."
Johnson and Skye Truss added 10 and nine points for the Hornets, who built a 39-6 halftime lead.
3A No. 6 Celina 51, Shoemaker 47 - At Brock, Kiara Rawls, Cion Hicks and Hailee Showers scored all of the Lady Grey Wolves points and without any help, Shoemaker lost the fifth-place game of the Brock Showcase tournament.
Rawls scored a game-high 20 points, Hicks added 14 and Showers 13 for Shoemaker (7-8), which led by five at halftime.
Lorena 42, Copperas Cove 35 - At Lorena, the Lady Bulldawgs couldn't overcome a slow start, scoring just nine first-half points as the 3A No. 13 Lady Leopards claimed the championship in their own 7th Annual Vicki Mitchell-Lauren Timmons Memorial Tournament.
Shawnte Goff led Cove (10-5) with eight points and was named to the all-tournament team along with teammate Letia Howard.
Waco 64, Salado 60, 2OT - At Lorena, Carling Urben had 21 points and 12 rebounds, but Waco rallied in the second half to tie the game at the end of regulation and then outscored the Lady Eagles 14-7 in the extra periods.
Meredith Ward hit three 3-pointers and scored 16 points and Kirstie McGillick chipped in eight points to go along with a team-high 17 rebounds for Salado (3-6).
Ellison 52, Stephenville 48 - At Abilene, Jordanna Porter scored 13 points and had seven rebounds as the Lady Eagles captured third place in the Polk-Key City Tournament.
Ellison (9-3) outscored Stephenville 14-8 in the second quarter and used that narrow margin as the Honey Bees cut into its lead by one point in both the third and fourth quarters. Kenesha Saygo added 10 points for the Lady Eagles.
Austin High 34, Lampasas 22 - At Lorena, Julie Mize led the way with eight points for the Lady Badgers, who are at home Tuesday against McGregor.
