Killeen's Hard Hitterz 12U softball team competed in the Texas ASA 12U "C" Fast Pitch State Championship tournament on Saturday in Killeen.
After falling 11-1 against the Lady Chaps in their morning game, the Hard Hitterz and coaches David Somerville, Scott Stanley and Ronnie Brunson were determined to stay around a little longer in Game 2.
The Hard Hitterz struggled early in their 2 p.m. game, and allowed their opponents, the Lady Tigers to score five runs in the top of the first.
In the bottom of the inning, pitcher Kayla Hawson, lead-off batter for Killeen, took base on a single, advanced to second with a hit from shortstop Hailee Showers and took third on a wild pitch. Hawson came home on a wild pitch and scored the Hitterz first run of the game.
Showers scored shortly after, coming home on an error.
The Hitterz allowed the Lady Tigers a sixth run in the second inning but made a big comeback with help from Makia Anderson.
With Hawson and Showers on base, Anderson slapped a ball deep into left field for an in-the-park home run, bringing Killeen within one run of the Lady Tigers.
Hawson pitched her best in the fourth, striking out the side to retire the Lady Tigers.
With seven minutes remaining in the 90-minute timed game, the Hard Hitterz went on offense. The tying run came from Madison Stanley after she reached first on a dropped third strike. Stanley then stole second and was brought home on a sacrifice grounder from Hawson. Showers was left on third at the end of the inning and the game was forced into extra innings.
The Lady Tigers wasted little time in plating a run in the fifth, but the game was postponed at 3:45 p.m. due to lightning in the area.
As of press time, the Hard Hitterz game was scheduled to resume at 11:30 p.m. with the rest of the games being made up throughout the night and early morning hours. The championship game is scheduled for 11:45 a.m. today.
Other members of the Hard Hitterz are Amber Lagunas, Danielle Bess, Molly Knowles, Cara Somerville and Ronna Brunson.
