Harker Heights left tackle Camrhon Hughes verbally committed to the University of Texas after attending the Longhorns' second Junior Day this month, Knights coach Mike Mullins confirmed Saturday.

“He got the invite for the junior day earlier in the week, and went up there today, so when coach (Mack) Brown offered him, he accepted,” Mullins said. Hughes, listed at 6-foot-7 and 270 pounds with a 7-foot-9 wingspan, is a prototypical big-bodied left tackle prospect who fills a position of need for Texas.

He's the Longhorns' 12th commitment of the year, joining Copperas Cove athlete Orlando Thomas, who officially announced his decision Wednesday. Last year, former Belton quarterback David Ash committed to Texas early, eventually becoming an early enrollee.

Hughes will make his official announcement at a news conference at 3:30 p.m. Monday at the Harker Heights field house.

“That was probably his No. 1 choice all along,” Mullins said of Texas. “But it still is just a commitment at this point.”

Hughes had offers from Texas A&M, Baylor and Oklahoma State, among others. He is the first KISD athlete to commit to Texas since former Shoemaker great and Tampa Bay defensive tackle Roy Miller.
