HARKER HEIGHTS Felicia Galvez and Lyka Francisco won the A-Division girls doubles title Friday in the Ellison Invitational to help the Knights tennis team take first place in the 14-team tournament.

Will Truitt reached the finals in B boys singles. Alyssa Broadus advanced to the semifinals in A girls singles. Nikki Davis reached the semis in B girls singles. The Knights also made a semifinal appearance in B mixed doubles with Michael Joseph and Yezlia Golderos and placed a second team in the A girls doubles semis with Stephanie Blackburn and Kristin Bunjes.

After a first-round bye, Galvez and Francisco cruised past Georgetown, 10-2, then defeated Ellison's Michelle Rodgers and Susan Gogel, 6-4, 6-1. In the championship match, Galvez and Francisco took a 6-2, 6-2 win over Cedar Park.

Davis was eliminated 10-6 by Round Rock's Aimeng Ji. Truitt finished runner-up to Temple's Florian Haneke after a 6-4, 6-1 loss. Broadus was knocked out by Round Rock's Colleen Lucas, 6-4, 6-5. Golderos and Joseph lost 6-2, 6-2 to Georgetown in the semis.

Boys soccer team drops 13-5A opener

District play began Friday for the Harker Heights boys soccer team with a 1-0 home loss to A&M Consolidated.

"It was very close," said Heights coach Jeremy Key. "Most of the game was played probably in the middle two-thirds of the field. It was a back-and-forth battle. They had probably better and a lot more scoring opportunities than we did."

Consolidated scored the game's only goal late in the first half.

Heights sophomore defender David Cremin and junior midfielder Chris Stroud were standouts in Friday's match.

The Knights (3-5-1) continued a rough stretch through 13-5A on Tuesday at vastly improved Copperas Cove, a 2-0 winner Friday in Temple. The Knights then host Belton on Friday and play at Temple on Tuesday.
