Lady Knights open district play with win

HARKER HEIGHTS The Harker Heights Lady Knights got 21 points from junior forward Whitney Tucker and 14 more from junior guard Jessica Kelly as they topped the Belton Lady Tigers, 53-37, Tuesday night in Belton to open District 13-5A action.

Effectively using their full-court press, the Lady Knights (7-3, 1-0) forced several Belton turnovers and converted many of them into easy transition buckets as Heights shot a season-best 58% from the field.

Heights took control of the contest early and held a double-digit lead throughout the first half. Belton surged back in third period to close to within seven, 36-29, but the Lady Knights countered with a 17-8 spurt in the fourth quarter to seal the victory.

"I'm real excited about how the girls played," head coach Lisa Hess said. "I'm just very pleased with the overall team effort that we had. We went ahead early and stayed ahead for awhile but we also kept our composure when (Belton) started coming back."

Heights now plays in its second tournament in as many weeks. The Lady Knights face San Antonio Churchill at 10 a.m. today in the first round of the double-elimination Hays Consolidated tournament.

If Heights wins, it would play the winner of the San Marcos/Round Rock Stony Point matchup at 11:30 a.m. on Friday.

Hess said she and her team would love to get another shot at San Marcos, a squad that narrowly (60-58) defeated Heights in the Del Valle tournament last weekend.

If the Lady Knights lose their first-round tilt they would play later today at 5:30 p.m.

Player of the Week

Dustan Allen, junior forward Allen was a force in the Knights 67-50 win over Waco University on Tuesday night, snaring rebounds, blocking shots and scoring 14 points. Allen was 6-of-9 from the foul line in the victory.
