Jaquail Haskins capped his high school football career Wednesday when he signed with Army.  Killeen’s senior running back has another accolade to bring with him: a Texas Sports Writers Association All-State honorable mention.

Haskins and Roos linebacker Royce Asi were both honorable mentions on the 60th annual Collin Street Bakery TSWA Class 4A All-State Football Team released Thursday.

The all-state honor is Haskins’ second and Asi’s first this season.

“I thought he had a great year,” Killeen coach Sam Jones said. “He caught the eye of everybody we played and carried us for two or three games. He is an outstanding man to have on the team.”

Haskins ran for a career-best 1,550 yards and 20 touchdowns this season. He had seven 100-yard games and three 200-yard games and helped Killeen reach the playoffs for a third-straight season.Asi, who plans to attend Southeast Prep in Houston in the fall and get to Hawaii from there, led the Roos’ defense with 113 total tackles this season. The 5-foot-10, 180-pound senior had 52 solo tackles, nine tackles for loss and two sacks. He also forced a pair of fumbles and recovered one.

Asi was an honorable mention on both the TSWA and the Associated Press Sports Editors all-state lists last season as a junior.

“Royce was physical,” Jones said. “He was really a leader in the way he performed and the way he practiced.“I am very proud of the awards that they get.”

Aledo running back Johnathan Gray was the Offensive Player of the Year and Denton Ryan’s  Mario Edwards was the Defensive Player of the Year.

Mesquite Poteet coach Randy Jackson was the Coach of the Year. He led the Pirates to a Division II semifinal and a 12-3 finish after an 0-10 season in 2009.

Gray, a 195-pound junior for the Division II state champion Bearcats, rushed for 3,218 yards on 352 carries with 59 touchdowns and caught 15 passes for 233 yards with two scores.

Edwards posted 50 tackles for losses and returned two fumbles for touchdowns this season for the Raiders, who lost to Lake Travis in the Division I state final.
