Four candidates for the Harker Heights head coach and athletic coordinator position will answer questions by the Harker Heights' superintendent's council this afternoon at 1 p.m. hoping to fill the vacancy left when former Knights head coach Ross Rogers announced his retirement on Jan. 13.
Each candidate is expected to spend between 45 minutes to an hour answering the council's questions, and Killeen ISD Executive Athletic Director Martin Allen hopes to have an answer at the end of the process.
"We want to get them in here as soon as possible," Allen said. He added that he'd like to have the new coach in place after spring break or April 1 at the very latest.
Rogers' tenure with the Knights ended at the end of the February.
Allen's office received applications from nearly 40 qualified individuals before the posting's Feb. 9 deadline.
From those 40 applicants, Allen and his staff reduced the field to 13 and finally down to the final four that will be presented at this afternoon's meeting.
The Florence Buffaloes also hope to have a new head coach and athletic director named before the first of April.
Florence ISD Superintendent Mike Martindale said he will present a lone candidate to the school board at the monthly board meeting on March 19 at 7 p.m. in the Florence Middle School library.
Martindale said a six-member committee narrowed a field of 140 applicants to 10 and then narrowed that number down to four for second interviews. After the second interview phase, the committee made its final recommendation.
Former Buffaloes head coach Greg Carter is under contract with Florence until the end of the school year.
Though he is no longer acting as the school's head football coach, Carter is still the power-lifting coach and teaches science.
