The District 12-5A girls' playoff picture has been in place for over a week, with champion Ellison ahead of Harker Heights, Temple and A&M Consolidated.

But the order for the final three spots will need more time.

The Lady Knights, Lady Tigers and Tem-Cats are all 9-4 in district going into their finales and could finish tied. A&M Consolidated (23-9) goes to last-place Belton while Temple (24-9) is at home against seventh-place Bryan. Heights (23-10) faces fifth-place Copperas Cove, but the Lady Bulldawgs have lost five of their last seven games, including a 65-48 loss to Heights.

If all three win or lose, the ensuing playoff will likely be Thursday and Saturday at a neutral site. The coaches will meet Wednesday to finalize the details. A coin flip is likely in the plans somewhere, either to determine who may be the automatic fourth seed or who gets a first-round bye in the playoff.

"We just all have to get in a room, agree, agree on the site and agree on the officials," Heights head coach Shirretha Nelson said. "…We have like a thousand options out there and we're just kind of in a pickle."

Even a two-team tie will likely lead to a tiebreaker since each team split its season series with the other two.

Looking ahead at the playoff's bi-district round, the seedings do matter. Whoever finishes fourth, for example, faces 11-5A-leading and fourth-ranked DeSoto (27-4).

The third seed gets Tyler Lee, which is 22-8 but lost to DeSoto by 30 points in their first meeting. The district runner-up faces a 15-win Mesquite Horn team in the first round.

"It's just really going to be luck of the draw," Nelson said. "Something is going to be determined by a coin toss."

A good loss?

No one likes to lose.

But Harker Heights coach Celneque Bobbitt would have rather lost Friday than to lose further down the line — like in the playoffs.

The Knights lost their first District 12-5A game to A&M Consolidated on Friday, 59-57. The loss cost them a chance to win the district title earlier than later and, of course, it cost Harker Heights a chance to do what they had never done before — go undefeated through district play.

"A loss is usually bad, but is sometimes good," Bobbitt said. "As bad as we played … we only lost by two points at the end of the game.

"Now we got the worst out of us, we have to get back to playing the best, like we were."

Harker Heights gets a second chance to wrap up the title tonight.

If Harker Heights wins against Copperas Cove today they'll clinch the 12-5A title outright with two games to go.

"We just have to continue to play team like we were up to that point," Bobbitt said. "We got a little selfish (Friday) and didn't start playing team ball again until it was too late."

Bobbitt, though, wants his team to take care of business today. A second loss wouldn't be good.

"You just have to seize the moment and not wait until the final two games," he said.

Today's games to watch

Shoemaker boys (14-11, 5-6 12-5A) at Ellison (18-11, 8-3), 5:30 p.m. — In another Killeen cross-town rivalry game, the stakes are high for both teams. Shoemaker is fighting for the final playoff spot in 12-5A, while Ellison is trying to maintain its hold on second over Bryan.

Robinson girls at Gatesville (17-12, 5-4), 6:30 p.m. — The Gatesville girls are in a must-win situation. In order to make the playoffs out of District 19-3A, they have to defeat Robinson. However, they also need a Waco La Vega loss
