It was like she hadnt just won a silver medal.
Cion Hicks celebrated placing second in the discus at the 5A state track meet with a few hugs and congratulations by a few friends and family and lunch.
The Shoemaker junior wasnt done throwing yet; the celebrations had to wait. I was excited that I was able to get the discus but, like my coach always says, I only have 30 minutes to celebrate because I have another event to do, Hicks said. So, I couldnt dwell on the fact, Hey, I got this, because if Im still thinking about it and Im in shot put, Im not going to do what I have to do there.
When she was finally done, Hicks had two silver medals, one that corrected her ninth-place finish in the discus the year the before and another in her shot put debut at the UIL State Track and Field Championships last weekend at Mike A. Myers Stadium in Austin. She also earned her second straight Daily Herald All-Area girls track MVP accolade.
I still think its really good whether its silver or not because theres people that didnt get anything, Hicks said. Im bringing something back Im bringing hardware back. I couldve brought nothing back and still did my best.
But, its best that I brought something back and to know I actually worked really hard this year and I have another shot at it at next year.
Hicks finished behind Mansfield Legacy senior Shelbi Vaughan in both shot and discus with her throws of 160 feet, 10 inches in the discus and 43-10 ¾ in the shot. Vaughan threw a 50-1 ¼ to win the shot and a 187-10 win the discus and break the state meet record.
I think it set in when I went to the school and everybody was congratulating me and was really in shock and awe of what I did, Hicks said of her two silver medals. I figured out what I actually did and brought back to Killeen.
