According to Ellison girls basketball coach Truman Meissner, success or failure in the upcoming 2004-2005 season will hinge on improving his team's biggest weakness: finding the hoop.
Coming off a 6-21 campaign which saw the Lady Eagles finish 1-9 in District 16-4A, Meissner's primary concern is finding girls who can shoot a luxury Ellison hasn't enjoyed for the better part of three years.
"We're spending more time in workouts just shooting the ball than we've probably ever done before," Meissner said. "Last year we did a lot of good things in every other facet of the game, but we just couldn't score."
Returning just six players from last season's squad, Ellison will again field one of the youngest teams in the district, with as many as five freshmen still vying for roster spots.
Senior post Mica Williams (12.0, 5.0) is of primary importance, having led the Lady Eagles in both scoring and rebounding last season. Junior guards Sharnette Williamson (5-5) and Lisa Hicklen (5-5) are two others.
"Sharnette has shot the ball real well in workouts," Meissner said. "I look for Lisa and Mica to step up and do some scoring for us also."
In order to help generate more offense, Meissner plans to step on the gas a bit.
Hoping to create more easy scoring opportunities, Ellison will pressure defensively and run offensively more than they have in the past.
"We're still going to be really young," Meissner said. "But we'll be a little more up-tempo this year, because we don't have the height to just overpower people.
"We're hoping what we're doing offensively and defensively will help our shooting percentages and maybe we'll put a few more points on the board."
Other returning players include 5-1 junior Shytavia Jones, 5-9 senior LaKeisha Robinson, and 5-9 senior Terika Motley.
Newcomers vying for roster spots include 5-6 junior Erika Jordan, 5-9 senior Kiara Smith, 5-5 sophomore Eloisa Seabrooks, 5-3 freshman Sharise Logwood, 5-4 freshman Jasmine Whetstone, 5-6 freshman Ashley Peebles, 5-5 freshman Iesha Williams and 5-2 freshman Brittany Clarke.
The Lady Eagles will open their season with a 6:30 p.m. game Tuesday at Burnet. Ellison's home opener will be Nov. 21st when it hosts Pflugerville Hendrickson and its district opener will be Jan. 6th when it hosts Lampasas.
