Even head coach Latisha Williams didn't think a tournament championship was likely after the way her Lady Roos started the season.

Needless to say, Killeen's seventh-year head coach was pleasantly surprised Wednesday when the Lady Roos were given the G.M. Blackman Tournament championship trophy after defeating Round Rock McNeil 56-55 in Bastrop.

"Maybe they needed some time off or maybe the rest did them some good," Williams said. "They've looked really good these last four games. They really showed me what they're capable of."

Imari Simpson scored 15 points and Jasmine Goodwine scored 13 to lead Killeen (11-10) to its sixth straight win.

After beating Smithville and former 25-4A rival Hutto on Thursday, the Lady Roos, who started the season 4-8, knocked off Round Rock Stony Point 41-40 in a championship bracket semifinal earlier Wednesday, getting a game-high 10 points from Goodwine.

"These last two days we've been getting transition baskets and the post players are scoring," Williams said. "We've looked a lot better than we did earlier this year."

Belton, Shoemaker split at McDonald's Invitational

The day started and ended differently for the Lady Tigers and Lady Grey Wolves, but both ended up 1-1 after the first day of the Bryan-College Station McDonald's Invitational.

Torie Henderson scored 11 points to lead the Lady Tigers' in a 31-23 win over Houston Madison in their first-round game and led Belton with five points in its second-round loss to Katy Seven Lakes, 51-16.

The Lady Tigers (5-14) play Clear Creek today at noon.

After losing to Austin Anderson 46-36 in its first-round game, Shoemaker rebounded with a 69-51 win over Corpus Christi Ray, getting 26 points from Kiara Rawls.

Rawls scored 18 to lead all scorers in the loss to Anderson, but against Ray she had plenty of help. Hailee Showers scored 18 and Cion Hicks added 13 for the Lady Grey Wolves (10-10). Shoemaker plays either Spring Westfield or Kingwood in a consolation semifinal today at 3 p.m.

Runnin' Roos in FWISD Coca-Cola semifinals

Demarius Cress scored 15 of his game-high 19 points in the second half, including a buzzer-beating 3-pointer to give Killeen a 59-56 win over Mansfield Summit in a championship quarterfinal game at the Fort Worth ISD Coca-Cola Classic.

The Runnin' Roos (8-10) play O.D. Wyatt in a semifinal today at 12:30. The winner plays either Crowley or No. 16 Austin LBJ in the championship at 8 p.m.

After Killeen rallied from a 17-point third quarter deficit to take a 56-54 lead, Summit hit two free throws that tied the game with 14 seconds left. Jamison Hicks drove into the lane before kicking the ball back to Cress, who banked in the game-winner from about 23 feet.

Hicks and Victor Glaze each scored 10 and Brian Long added eight in limited action. Tevin Bartney grabbed 12 rebounds to go along with five points and a big block that prevented Summit from taking a late lead.

Lampasas splits final two at Cameron tournament

The Badgers closed out their Cameron Christmas Classic experience with a 66-24 win over Lexington and a 46-45 loss to Giddings.

Secody Howard and Cullen Singleton each scored 12 points and T.J. Adams added 11 in the Badgers (11-7) win over Lexington.

Mason Murray hit two 3-pointers and scored 12 points to lead Lampasas against Giddings, which rallied from a 22-18 halftime deficit. Shonderius Howard added 10 and Secody Howard chipped in nine.

The Badgers host Waco on Tuesday and play at Austin Travis next Friday.
