Minus his leading scorer, Tom Santos, who returned to his native Brazil two weeks ago, Ellison boys soccer coach Niles Dunnells has had a difficult time finding the right offensive combinations.

But with an 18-shot, 2-0 win over Mexia at Leo Buckley Stadium on Monday, some of those problems may have been solved.

Jed Campbell and Josh Colberg each scored a goal and Zach Wilson notched a shutout to lift Ellison (9-11-1, 7-7 District 17-4A), which held Mexia to just eight shots en route to the win.

The Blackcats, who have struggled to a 6-11-3 overall record, fell to 0-14 in district play with the loss.

"Tom (Santos) was definitely our goal scorer," Dunnells said. "Without him, we've been trying to find someone to fill that void."

Campbell was the first to try scoring with an assist from Ricky Pallanez in the sixth minute of play to put the Eagles up for good.

Aided by a Mexia penalty on a hands call in the box, Colberg's goal came on a penalty kick with 10:22 left to play.

"I felt like we did a pretty good job of possessing the ball tonight, which allows us to transition up," Dunnells said. "That allows us to get the attack going and that's something we were missing early on.

"We (no longer) have a guy who can step up and score all the time, so we have to play a possession game to try and build an attack. It was a big key tonight that we were able to do that."

When asked if he had a moment for the newspaper following the loss, Mexia coach Allen Ham's only response was "not really."

Ellison will next see action when it faces Killeen on Friday at Leo Buckley Stadium at 7:30 p.m.

Both teams have already been mathematically eliminated from playoff contention.
