The Hornets knew how tough District 19-3A was going to be, but their lineup was no slouch, either.

The all-district teams, released Monday, are full of Gatesville household names like Micah Thompson and Tyler English.

The pieces were there for Gatesville to make a run, but the playoffs just were not in the picture. “For whatever reason it didn’t happen,” Gatesville coach Graig Keeton said. “Everyone saw how good the district was when two of the teams are still playing after graduation. It’s frustrating just to know what kind of team we had — one of the top three or four teams Gatesville’s had as far as talent-wise ever — and nothing to show for it other than a pretty good record.”

Seniors Thompson and English were both selected to the first team alongside junior pitcher Tyler

Jaynes and junior designated hitter Cullen Mayhew. Seniors Allan Watson, Slaton Meyer and Cort Dixon were second-team selections.

“English carried us all year long. He was the most consistent guy we had in the lineup, so that was no surprise,” Keeton said. “Micah, he had some hot streaks during the year and he did his thing — got on base, scored a lot of runs for us. ... He’s been with me for four years, so I’m going to miss writing his name in that lineup, but definitely the district knew what kind of ballplayer he was.”

Gatesville finished fourth in the district behind Robinson, a state semifinalist, China Spring, a regional finalist, and Lorena.

Robinson’s Chad Hollingsworth was the 19-3A MVP and teammates Hunter Abbe and Zach Sullivan shared the offensive MVP honor. China Spring senior Sterling Wynn was the defensive MVP and Lorena sophomore Bobby Strahan was the newcomer of the year.

“For whatever reason, we ran into some bad luck and one bad inning in about three of our five district losses, one bad inning,” Keeton said. “We beat the team up an down the whole game and then get one bad inning. But, that’s baseball, so you have to live with it.”

Seniors Josh Allyn and Andrew Ramos were two of five baseball players to receive District 8-4A second-team honors for Killeen.

Juniors Olivia Lacewell (pitcher) and Leah Jones (outfield) both made the all-district second team for the Lady Roos.

Joining Allyn (pitcher) and Ramos (first base) were juniors Daniel Vega (catcher), Marcos Hinojos (second base) and John Rechtorovic (third base).

Leslie James made the Texas High School Coaches Association (THSCA) academic all-state second team.
