FORT HOOD – The second round of the III Corps Boxing Smoker continues today as Army boxers from across the country vie for titles in eight weight classes.
Preliminary competition goes through Wednesday and ends with final bouts Thursday at Fort Hood's Abrams Physical Fitness Center. The competition goes from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. through Wednesday and the finals are scheduled to start at 7 p.m. Thursday.
More than 100 Fort Hood boxers and 40 to 50 others from Fort Bliss; Fort Bragg, N.C.; Fort Sill, Okla.; Fort Drum, N.Y.; and Fort Stewart, Ga., signed up for the smoker and competition started Monday.
Thursday's finals will be a "world-class event," complete with a professional lighting system and fighter introductions, said Maj. Marcus Gengler, a 1st Air Cavalry Brigade, 1st Cavalry Division officer who is providing Army support to the event.
Male and female pro boxers also will participate in exhibition fights on Thursday.
The smoker is a single-elimination tournament, and trophies are awarded to individuals and eight-person teams. More than 10 women are also scheduled to box this week, said Winston Parham, a trainer brought in to oversee the Fort Hood contestants' preparation.
The smoker is open and free to all. Abrams is located at 62nd Street and Support Avenue, Building 23001.
