Copperas Cove lit up the scoreboard with nine 3-pointers in its 59-47 tournament quarterfinal win over Cedar Park earlier Thursday but struggled to get anything to fall in the loss to Midway.

“It’s a great learning experience: when things go wrong, what do you do,” Cove coach Teresa Durham said. “We didn’t step up to that challenge tonight. Things weren’t going right and we fought back there for a while and then they hit a couple of shots. We just didn’t respond to that.” Brittany Gamble, Jasmin Johnson, Alex Rodriguez and Carlie Tuiasosopo each scored six to lead the Lady Dawgs (14-8), who play Lorena at 3:30 p.m. in the third-place game, and Mikayla Blount scored consecutive baskets in the third quarter to cut Midway’s once-12-point lead to four, 26-22, with 4:46 left in the period.

Midway finished the quarter on an 8-3 run, getting 3-pointers from Asadia James and Kandace Byrd, to take a 34-25 lead going into the fourth quarter.Byrd and Andria Farley each scored 13 to lead Midway.

“Midway’s a good team and I’m glad to play tough teams because when I look down my road next week — Bryan, A&M Consolidated — and then we have Shoemaker and Heights,” Durham said. “Those are all really good games, so mentally, if we can learn a little lesson and get a little bit better before then, I’ll take it.”

Sarai Rodriguez scored 14 points and Alex Rodriguez hit four of Copperas Cove’s nine 3-pointers to lead the Lady Dawgs over Cedar Park.

The Lady Dawgs outscored Cedar Park 37-19 in the second and third quarters after trailing 18-14 at the end of the first quarter.

Alex Rodriguez scored 12 points and Johnson, who hit three 3s, finished with 11 points. Copperas Cove led 31-25 at halftime after outscoring the Lady Timberwolves 17-7 in the second quarter and took a 50-37 lead into the fourth.
