Tied at 5-5 two minutes into the game, it looked like Copperas Cove was going to have its hands full with 3A No. 10 Lorena. Not so fast.

The Lady Dawgs scored the next 16 straight points as Jasmin Johnson drained three of her four 3-pointers in the first half and Cove held on for a 37-22 victory to win third place. “If you live and die by the 3, and we try not to, but when you’re hitting, you’re hard to defend,” said first-year Cove coach Teresa Durham. “And right now we’re shooting the ball well, and this was one of the games when it all goes well.”

The last of Johnson’s first-half treys gave Cove a 24-6 lead with 5:12 to play in the second quarter. But after that, the well went dry as Cove didn’t make another bucket until Johnson’s final 3 midway through the third quarter.

Thankfully, Lorena didn’t do much either, managing just a pair of short jumpers from Calley Crye during that span. Leading 28-15 entering the fourth quarter, the Lady Dawgs sealed the victory at the free throw line, hitting 9-of-16 in the frame.
