It was a rough start to the season for area girls soccer teams on Friday.

Killeen ISD's four high schools – Ellison, Harker Heights, Killeen and Shoemaker – are co-hosting the Cen-Tex Showcase this weekend, and all four teams struggled as they combined for a 1-6-1 record on Friday with Killeen picking up the only victory – 4-2 – against Austin Akins. Ellison battled Elgin to a 1-1 draw, but won the shootout, 3-1, to pick up two points in the White Division standings.

The Lady Eagles dropped their nightcap to Round Rock, 6-0. Heights and Shoemaker both went 0-2-0 on Friday with Heights losing to Azle, 1-0, and Bastrop, 6-2, and Shoemaker losing to Little Elm, 10-0, and Austin High, 8-0.

Copperas Cove also is participating in the tournament and the Lady Dawgs compete in the Silver Division with Killeen. Cove dropped both of its matches to Akins (4-2) and Leander (3-2).

Leander also beat Killeen 2-0 in the tournament-opener for both teams.

"We knew we were going to have some tough matches, but we managed to stay together," said Cove coach Hagen Streckel. "These matches were good tests for our team."

Cove (0-2-0) meets Killeen (1-1-0) at 11:30 a.m. today at the Killeen Support Services Center field. KSSC has served as the Lady Roos' home field for the tournament.

Ellison, Heights and Shoemaker have played all of their matches at their respective auxiliary fields. Ellison (0-1-1) faces Forney at 9:30 a.m. today at EHS, while Heights hosts Waco University at 11:30, and Shoemaker receives a visit from Carrollton Creekview at 9:30.

Despite not scoring yet this season, Shoemaker coach Central Hicks maintained a positive outlook.

"We have some girls who have never played soccer before, and we're going to have a rough go-round at the start of the season," Hicks said. "But, if we can use these matches to improve ourselves for district play, it will have served its purpose.

"We're getting better, but we just have to become confident in what we're trying to do."

In Killeen's victory against Akins, Song Yee Jung unleashed an offensive fury on the Lady Eagles as she scored the Lady Roos' first three goals. Jung's hat trick is a career-high for goals scored in a single match.

Kesley Wilcox scored the fourth goal in the second half. She also assisted Jung's first two goals, and Natasha Garcia assisted Jung's third goal, which broke a 2-2 tie.

In Ellison's draw with Elgin, Brianna Alston gave the Lady Eagles a 1-0 halftime lead as she scored her team's only regulation goal in the first half off a feed from Jessica Stuckey. Elgin tied the match with a second-half goal, and coaches from both teams elected to use a shootout to determine tiebreaking purposes.

Axita Patel, Katie Venchensont and Jasmine Chapman scored in the shootout, and Kim Harvey stopped three of Elgin's four shootout attempts to preserve the shootout victory.

Although Ellison won the shootout, the match officially is recorded as a tie.

In Cove's loss to Akins, Cara Lumpkin and Chelsea Bledsoe each scored for the Lady Dawgs, and Lumpkin scored both Cove goals in the loss to Leander.

Heights and Azle were involved in a scoreless tie until the 64th minute when Shannon Scoggins scored the only goal of the match to give the Lady Hornets a 1-0 victory. in the Lady Knights' nightcap, Bastrop jumped out to a 4-0 lead in the first half and never looked back as the Lady Bears won, 6-2.

Kristyn Rhorick scored Heights' first goal of the season in the closing minutes of the first half, and Nick Mueller scored the Lady Knights' other goal.

Following this morning's division matches, the teams will be paired off into first-, second-, third- and fourth-place matches based on their finishes in each division. The Black and White Divisions face each other as will the Gold and Silver Divisions.

The Black-White matches will all take place at 1:30 p.m. with the first-place match taking place at the KSSC, the second-place match at Heights, the third-place at Shoemaker and the fourth-place at Ellison. Those four sites will host the same place Gold-Silver matches at 3:30.
