HARKER HEIGHTS - The Lady Knights needed to be more patient on offense but they didn't have to wait long to get the perfect shot opportunities Harker Heights coach Shirretha Nelson talked about between the first and second quarters.

Eighth-ranked Harker Heights shot almost 50 percent from the floor and outscored Shoemaker 40-11 in the second and third quarters, routing the Lady Grey Wolves 73-45 in the District 12-5A opener for both teams.

"We're working on being patient, not taking the first opportunity, and maybe not even the second opportunity, but just waiting and looking for the perfect opportunity," Nelson said. "I feel like we did that a lot better in the second half by far than we did in the first half."

JaQuan Jackson scored 21 of her team-high 24 points in the two periods for Harker Heights (17-0, 1-0). Shanice Davis added 17 and Brianna Freeman scored 11. All but one Lady Knights player chipped in point production.

"I felt like I just needed to step up and be a team leader because I was a little down the first quarter," said Jackson, who scored nine in the second quarter and was recovering from a stomach virus over the weekend. "It felt like it was good to help out my team because they missed me also. Everyday, they were texting me, 'Hey, I hope you feel better, do what you've got to do to get better to help us win.'"

Kiara Rawls scored 18 of her 29 points in the fourth quarter, helping the Lady Grey Wolves (7-10, 0-1) trim a lead that reached 39 in the third quarter. Cion Hicks chipped in 10 but three other players combined for the team's final six points.

"Nobody stepped up, that's just it," Shoemaker coach Shauna Showers said. "We've been struggling, we've had three players that show up that play (Rawls, Hicks and Hailee Showers) and I have one that fouls out (Showers) and gets in foul trouble - can't play her. I don't know."

The Lady Knights led 18-10 after the first quarter, but Shoemaker was just 3-of-11 from the field and 4-of-9 from the free-throw line and didn't get its first field goal until a Rawls' jumper with 3:29 left. When Shoemaker struggled again at the start of the second quarter, Heights took advantage. The Lady Grey Wolves hit just two of their first eight shots of the quarter and turned the ball over eight times meanwhile Jackson was just getting started for the Lady Knights.

Daysha Roberts' 3-pointer trimmed Heights' lead to 20-13 with 6:17 left in the first half, but Jackson scored on a layup and a pull-up 3-pointer to stretch the Lady Knights' lead to double-digits and spark a 12-3 run. Heights' lead was 35-17 at halftime but didn't let up in the second half. The Lady Knights scored the first nine points of the third quarter and then hit five straight field goals after the Lady Grey Wolves' first of two field goals in the period to take a 58-19 lead with 1:28 to go.

The Lady Grey Wolves won the fourth quarter 24-15 with Rawls scoring 18 of those points and 14 of Shoemaker's first 16.
