In what’s began relatively a tough first year in Class 3A for Salado athletics, the boys basketball team is garnering a lot of attention.

For the first time in four years, the Eagles (16-5, 1-0 25-3A) find themselves ranked in the top 25 in the state, creeping in at No. 23 in the latest 3A standings released by TABC/Tex Preps Basketball Magazine. “The kids really like it. It’s fun for them to be ranked, but it’s really early in the season, and we talked about that,” Salado coach Kenny Mann said. “Being top 25 is fun, but really it only counts where there’s about 25 teams left and you’re still playing — then you’re really top 25.”

Admittedly trying to keep their newfound recognition in perspective, the Eagles face a big test tonight against 25-3A rival and No. 8 ranked Liberty Hill (20-4, 1-0).

“I think it’s more of a big deal if we win it than if we lose it,” Mann said. “I think we’re going in with not a lot of pressure on us, not a lot of people expect us to win.”

Which would make a victory over the Panthers all the more meaningful in the Eagles’ inaugural 3A season. Since the Panthers 56-42 victory over Salado in the championship game of the Eagles’ own Coach Smith Memorial Tournament last month, both teams have only dropped a single game with Liberty Hill winning 10-of-11 and Salado winning 7-of-8.
