COPPERAS COVE — The series is over and it goes to Harker Heights. Meeting for the third time in six days, the Lady Knights and rival Killeen tied 1-1 in pool play Thursday at the Lady Bulldawg Classic.

“I’m tired of playing Killeen,” Heights girls soccer coach Royce Mitchel joked afterward. “It’s getting old.”The teams tied 0-0 on Tuesday in a prescheduled, nondistrict game. Heights won the first meeting, a 1-0 victory Saturday in the Centex Shootout consolation final.

Heights scored first Thursday when the Lady Roos tried to clear a first-half ball but it ricocheted off Heights’ Samantha Hammonds. She settled the loose ball and put it in from about 20 yards out with a 16:32 left in the half.

“We actually made three defensive mistakes before they scored the goal, so it wasn’t a surprise to me that we gave up that goal,” Killeen head coach Richard Romeo said. “Any time your defense is pressured, cover balance, and so we had no cover and no balance. That’s why they scored that one.”

The lead was short lived, however.Three minutes later, Killeen’s Nathali Perez went up the left side. The junior found Haley Crissman, who went neat post to tie the game.

Killeen finishes Pool A against Copperas Cove at 9:30 a.m. today. Following pool play, the teams will split into second-round pools based on their finish. The three winners will be in the Blue Pool, the second-place teams in the Gold Pool and the remaining teams in the White Pool.
