Johnny “Truck” Graham lobbied for three years to get the 2016 International Powerlifting Federation Raw World Classic Championships to Killeen.
Last November in Luxembourg, he succeeded.
Beginning Sunday, the championships will be held each day at 9 a.m. at the Killeen Civic & Conference Center until June 26. Admission for the event is $5 each day.
“This is great,” Graham said. “It’s an honor for the city, it’s an honor for myself, and it’s also an honor for all the military members here who helped me out. I’m very proud of it, and I’m very proud of what we have done here.
“I’ve been on every continent, except for Antarctica, bidding for this event.”
It took a lot of work to bring the massive powerlifting event to Killeen, and an immeasurable amount of people aided in the cause.
“I’ll be the first to tell you my name is on the marquee, but I’ve got about 60 or 70 people from the Fort Hood area and around the country who make me look good,” Graham quipped. “It’s been a long process with people of the Fort Hood team, and I have a group of family members who have been with me for years that fly out of Ohio and set up my communication system.
“It’s been a lot of hard work, and my name is on the marquee, but it’s not just me.”
Graham believes all the hard work everyone has put in has and will continue to come to fruition.
Expected to be present are 2015 IPF Raw World Champion Ray Williams, of the United States; IPF Hall of Famer Ielja Strik, of the Netherlands; 2015 Junior World Champion Yan-Fei Zhao, of Australia; and four-time IPF Raw World Champion and “Deadlift Queen” Kimberly Walford, of the USA.
