Waco Midway attacked, brought wave after wave of fresh bodies and the Pantherettes attacked Killeen some more.

And the Lady Roos' defensive wall held, for a time.

But Midway scored three goals in the final 20 minutes, including two in a 40-second span, to clinch the District 34-4A title and spoil Killeen's home finale Tuesday at Leo Buckley Stadium.

"We made them earn their goals," Killeen coach Richard Romeo said. "The first time we played them (a 7-0 Killeen loss), they kind of had their way - we made it real easy for them to score. I think tonight, we made it real hard."

Freshman Josey Meyer scored on a penalty kick in the 59th minute and Alyssa Paschal scored the second of her two goals 41 seconds later that gave Midway (14-4-4, 11-0 34-4A) a 3-0 lead. Paschal also scored on a direct kick in the 23rd minute to give the Pantherettes a 1-0 lead at halftime and Meyer assisted Midway's final goal in the 69th minute.

"We held them strong in the first half, but they just kept coming back. That's something we'll improve on," said Killeen senior defender Emily DiSalvo.

Of the bunch, only Meyer's penalty kick from 12 yards out was the easiest.

"They were doing a real good job of staying organized as a unit and keeping the space restricted to where we didn't have any space to work with," said Midway coach Bill Sharp of Killeen's first-half defense.

Killeen goalie Nia Duran collected 14 saves on 34 shot attempts by the Pantherettes and the Lady Roos' sophomore goal keeper wasn't even sure she'd be able to play until about an hour before the start because of a foot injury she sustained Friday.

"That motivated me to just come out here and try harder, because I was thinking I was going to let my team down," Duran said of the injury. "It was probably one of my best (performances) so far. ... Even though we lost, it was still really good."

Duran had eight saves in the first half and Midway missed its first nine shots before Paschal's direct kick from 37 yards away dropped in just below the crossbar and behind Duran.

Midway opened the second half with eight shots in the first 18 minutes of the half before Meyer's penatly kick with 20:47 left in the match. The Pantherettes then missed a shot before Paschal scored on a header off Bailey Johnston's corner kick with 20:06 left.

Taryn Weaver's goal off Meyer's assist gave Midway its final margin with just under 11 minutes to go.

The Lady Roos' only shot of the match came with 19:52 to go. Seconds after falling behind 3-0, Killeen junior forward Haley Crissman's shot from 35 yards out missed about five feet wide right of the upright.

"We only had one forward out there. ... The forward was just instructed to hold onto the ball as long as possible and dish it off to the wings and that's about all the offense we could generate," Romeo said. "We weren't looking for a lot of offense because if we send so many people out on offense, they're counter-attack would just kill us."
