ELM MOTT — For awhile, Friday night’s IMCA Southern SportMod feature race at Heart O’ Texas Speedway looked like another runaway for Belton driver G.W. Egbert. He easily weathered a field-tightening caution period on lap six, after building a full straightaway lead two circuits in. In fact, he appeared to be on the verge of laying the keys on the counter and checking out.

Then, he had to pick them up again.

Fighting what appeared to be a broken shock or spring, Egbert had to manhandle his No. 717 through the turns, while the 5 car of Waco’s T.J. Green relentlessly closed in, cutting Egbert’s lead to a car length. Green was unable to overtake the leader, with Egbert dashing under the checkered flag.
