ELM MOTT — For the first 14-plus laps of Friday’s IMCA Stock Car feature race at Heart O’ Texas Speedway, Eric Jones looked like he was in his own time zone.
Jones, a former Killeen resident who now races out of Troy, started fourth and quickly moved out front to lead the 11-car field until midway through the final circuit, when Elm Mott’s Benji Kirkpatrick, who had been steadily cutting down Jones’ margin, took over first place with a hard move into the final turn. The momentum sent Kirkpatrick up the track, opening the door for Jones to dive underneath and post his first win of 2015 at HOT.
Belton racer G.W. Egbert continued his mastery of the IMCA Southern SportMod class with his third straight feature win. Egbert, starting outside on row one, used an inside pass to move by race leader Anthony Simcik on lap six and had a full straightaway lead by circuit nine.
After a caution flag bunched up the field with four to go, Egbert got a big jump on the restart and drove away from the 16-car field to score the hat trick win.
