ELM MOTT — With race track officials nervously eyeing an approaching thunderstorm Friday night, Heart O’ Texas Speedway went into its version of a two-minute drill.
With the rain and lightning about an hour away, the night’s feature races went off at an accelerated pace, and a pair of local drivers found that starting second wasn’t a bad thing.
Killeen racer Zach Riley, competing in the IMCA Stock Car main event, took the top spot quickly on the first lap and led from flag to flag.
During his winning run, Riley staved off hard pressure from Killeen’s Anthony Otken, Dennis Bissonnette of Stephenville and Elm Mott driver Benji Kirkpatrick, to post his first 2015 win at HOT in the 15-car race..
Ten cars started the Street Stock feature, which saw Nolanville’s Gary Norman get his second win in two weeks at the Waco track after a two-decade-plus dry spell.
Norman was leading before the first lap was completed and had to hold off Waxahachie driver Drew Garcia and Tommy Kirkpatrick of Elm Mott, who both tried hard over the following 14 circuits, but couldn’t pass Norman.
