The Salado girls and boys track team each lead the Region IV-3A meet with 14 and 24 points, respectively - and the Lampasas boys squad is in third place with 10 points after the first day of competition Friday in Corpus Christi.

Both schools sent multiple participants on to the state meet.

Salado's Ryan Simmons (56 feet, 5 inches) and Robert Emrick (53-10) finished first and second in the boys shot put, while Rachel Hildebrand won the girls discus with a toss of 121-10.

The boys 800-meter relay team (42.96 seconds) rounded out the top finishers for the Eagles, and Joe Owens is also heading to state with a second-place finish in the 200.

Salado's Alex Cooke came up just short of a trip to state in the boys 3,200, finishing third with a time of 10:09.08.

As for the Badgers, they sent two athletes to state after Catherine Bloomfield took second in the 100 hurdles with a time of 14.34 seconds. Joining her is Shonderious Howard, who finished in a four-way tie for first in the high jump (6-4) but took the gold for needing less attempts to reach the winning height.

The Badgers had good showings from other athletes as well. Steven Jazdyk finished third in the 100 dash with a time of 10.5 seconds, while the boys 400 relay team (43.47) took third.

Also finishing third for the Badgers was the girls 1,600 relay, which finished in 4:14.70.

In the boys 100, Steven Jazdyk ran a 10.5 to tie for third.

Senior Zach Adams ran a season-best 14.88 seconds in the 110 hurdles, but finished sixth.

Roos' Glaze second in 4A high jump

Killeen's Victor Glaze jumped 6 feet, 10 inches to place him second in the high jump competition at the Region I-4A meet in Abilene.

Other Killeen contestants Friday were Amber Ellis, who took sixth in the long jump (17-2) for the Lady Roos and John Warren, who jumped 22-2 in the boys long jump.

Florence boys have three competing today

Florence's Ben Futrell, Alfredo Pena and Christian Gomez all qualified for today's finals at the Region IV-2A meet in San Marcos.

Futrell won his heat in the boys 200-meter dash while Pena will represent the Buffs in the 1,600 race.

Gomez has a chance to move on in the shot put category.

Jose Zapata is an alternate in the boys 800.
