The Shoemaker girls basketball team will host the Lady Grey Wolves Invitational today through Saturday. Three local teams will be participating in the event, including Shoemaker, Harker Heights and Killeen.
The first local game today will pit the Lady Knights against Pflugerville Connally at 1:30 p.m. in the main gym at Shoemaker. The second game will feature Killeen at Leander at 3 p.m., also in the main gym.
Connally is ranked 12th in the latest Texas Association of Basketball Coaches Class 4A poll.
"I expect Connally to do really well," said Shoemaker coach Shauna Showers.
The Lady Wolves are 3-7 going into the tournament and Showers hopes that the multiple games will help her team prepare for district, which begins Dec. 12.
"Based on last night's performance (a 64-33 loss to Copperas Cove) I hope we use it to inspire us for district," Showers said. " I think it will give us a different look than what we see on a daily basis at practice."
The Lady Wolves (3-7) will not play until Friday at 1:30 p.m. against Vista Ridge, following a second game between Killeen and Leander at 10:30 a.m.
"I hope that I see aggressive defense and that we run our offense as it should be run," Showers said of her hopes for the weekend.
Harker Heights will continue play at 3 p.m. on Friday against Llano, and Shoemaker will play its second game at 4:30 against Austin Anderson.
The tournament will continue Saturday with the 11 teams breaking up into three different divisions depending on prior play; a Gold, Silver and Bronze division make up the final bracket, with a champion and consolation winner in each division.
Additional teams participating in the tournament are Waco, Round Rock Westwood and Pflugerville Hendrickson.
