After losing to John Tyler the second game of the MT Rice/Masterfoods tournament, Shoemaker boys basketball coach Rick Kirkpatrick said he wanted to win the remaining two games of the tournament and reach the .500 mark for the season.

Mission accomplished.

The Grey Wolves (9-9) followed their loss to Tyler by downing Montgomery 54-45, largely due to the unveiling of a half-court trap.

By ambushing the point guard once he crosses midcourt and rotating the defenders towards the ball-handler, the furthest man from the ball, not coincidentally the most difficult to find with a pass, is the only one open.

Once implemented in the first quarter, SHS went on a 30-5 run on the strength of the trapping defense.

"It's a gamble," Kirkpatrick said of the half-court trap. "You're leaving yourself open with the double-team, but when the kids played hard it worked."

The victory over Montgomery advancing them to the next round, Shoemaker cruised past Corpus Christi Miller by the score of 72-51.

Cory Armour, who averaged 14 points during the tournament, scored 24 in leading SHS to its third win of the tourney.

The Grey Wolves, 0-1 in District 13-5A after falling to Bryan last week, attempt to even their district record when they visit Copperas Cove on Tuesday.

Player of the week:

Dezshon Madison-McGriff

Senior point guard

Madison-McGriff had just three total turnovers in the first three games of the MT Rice tournament opposite eight assists.

Statistic of the week:

The margin by which the boys basketball team out-rebounded first-round MT Rice tournament opponent Tuloso-Midway in a 53-38 win. SHS outrebounded each of its first three opponents of the tournament.
