HARKER HEIGHTS - Harker Heights was trying to find out the right mix.
Copperas Cove wanted to build off its scrimmage season.
Neither really wanted to do it against a district rival. Regardless, the two teams played an early precursor to the District 12-5A season, with the Lady Bulldawgs defeating the Lady Knights 2-0 at the Centex girls soccer tournament.
Copperas Cove (3-1) scored off a corner kick in the 12th minute when Shelbie Letzer sent a low kick into the box, where it bumped in between Cove's Genesis Rivera and Marissa Roest and several Heights defenders.
In the scram, it was tipped into the goal.
"We know we have a real good corner kicker in and we have been working all year getting the ball into dangerous spots and she bent it right at the goal and I don't know who touched it last ... all I know is it went in," said Cove coach Hagen Streckel.
Cove freshman Courtney Everett scored in the 10th minute of the second half, sending a low-line kick though the hands of Heights goalkeeper Katie McPherson. The 2-0 lead was more than the Lady Knights could overcome.
"We gave them a lot more scoring opportunities than I wanted, but we kind of were playing with a makeshift lineup and are still trying to find out who goes where," said Heights coach Royce Mitchel.
Heights' best chance for a goal came in the 15th minute, when Bria Howard broke free on a 2-on-1 break, but her shot clanged high off the crossbeam and back into the field of play.
"Sometimes that is the toughest thing - showing them they had the opportunity. If that goes in, it is a whole new ball game," Mitchel said.
Byron Nelson and Weatherford took first place in the double-pool tournament, defeating Leander Rouse and Austin LBJ, respectively.
In the other second-place game, Robinson defeated Lampasas in a shootout 4-1 after both teams ended regulation in a 0-0 tie.
Robinson's Kali Branch, Chasity Rocket and Aubrie Jurels put the Lady Rockets up 3-0 in the shootout, forcing Lampasas into a must make with its third shot. Bailey Hilgenberg kept the Lady Badgers alive when she popped a kick over the Lady Rockets' goalkeeper, but Kennedy Miller ended the game when she made it a perfect 4-for-4 for the Lady Rockets in the shootout. Lampasas lost its first match of the day, falling 3-1 to Austin LBJ. Freshman Analise Watson scored the Lady Badgers' goal.
Ellison and Killeen both finished the tournament with wins in the tournament's third-place games.
After a 1-1 start on Friday, the Lady Eagles rebounded with a 1-0 win over Arlington Sam Houston and then followed that up with a 2-1 win over Pflugerville Connally. Brooke Guerrero had two goals and Alyssa Conde also scored for Ellison. Shelly Townsend had and assist.
Killeen, meanwhile, lost 1-0 to Copperas Cove on an Amanda Arrisola goal, but defeated Lorena 1-0 for third place in the blue-green pool.
Both Shoemaker and Salado finished last in their respective pools.
Belton 3, CP Vista Ridge 0 - At Waco, Hadley Young scored two more goals and added an assist as the Lady Tigers shut out the Lady Rangers.
Young's best play wasn't her goals. It was the assist where after getting a pass from Jaime Boone, she hit Bekah Rush on a cross pass to the goal. Rush then hit a header into the net.
Ellison splits at Mustang Classic- At Marble Falls, Garrett Strickland scored two goals to and Daniel Soria had an assist in the Eagles' 2-0 win over Salado.
Ellison finished the day with a 1-0 loss to Austin Travis in the tournament's consolation game.
