Shut out in their previous game, the Harker Heights Lady Knights wasted little time getting on the scoreboard against Copperas Cove on Friday night at Leo Buckley Stadium.

Senior forward Trina Blackwell tallied a goal in the first 47 seconds of play and senior midfielder Calandre Singh added another score little more than two minutes later to help the Lady Knights pick up a 3-0 victory over the Lady Dawgs.

The win pushes the Lady Knights District 13-5A record to 5-3-1, their overall record to 8-8-3 and their record against Cove to 3-0 this season.

While admitting that a win is a win, Heights head coach Oscar Bersoza said he wasn't exactly pleased with how his team played.

"We scored our first two goals within three minutes so it looked good and then we scored our last one in the final minutes so there was a bulk of the game in the middle where we didn't play very well at all," Bersoza said. "That's a concern because we need to try and get ready for these next two games against Temple and Belton.

"You can't complain about a 3-0 win but what we were trying to accomplish didn't get accomplished today."

Bersoza did say, however, that he was proud that his team didn't completely overlook Cove (1-8 , 3-12-1) with games with district leaders Belton (7-0-1) and Temple (6-2) looming.

"The last time we played Cove we beat them 8-1 and I told the girls not to look past this one because if we lose this one, next week doesn't matter," Bersoza said. "So that's the good thing, tonight the girls played hard and we got the 'W'. It's always better to play bad and win than to play bad and lose."

Opening the contest aggressively, the Lady Knights got eight of their 21 shots on goal in the first five minutes of play.

It appeared sophomore midfielder Danielle Anderson would score the Lady Knights first goal of the game, however, her shot was too high and hit off the cross bar of the goal. Blackwell, being in the right place at the right time, gathered in the deflected shot and booted the ball past Cove goalkeeper Kristina Eikenberg to give Heights an early 1-0 lead.

A few minutes later, senior midfielder Calandre Singh scored with a right boot from 10 yards out. Singh would assist on the Lady Knights third and final goal, finding junior midfielder Felicia Cruz with a pass with less than eight minutes to play.

The Lady Knights return to action as they travel to face Belton at 7:30 p.m. on Tuesday.

n Ellison girls 3, Killeen 0 At Leo Buckley Stadium, Ellison got goals from Kandra Guynn, Amber Marbury and Darlene Olarte as the Lady Eagles posted their eighth shutout victory of the season.

With the win, EHS improved to 6-3 in District 17-4A play (8-9-1 overall record) while the Lady Roos fell to 3-6 in league play.

"I was pleased with the effort we gave tonight," Lady Eagles head coach Bryan Charlton said. "Killeen is a much improved team. But we came out aggressive in the second half and we were able to put a couple of shots through."

Ellison seemed to have control of the contest throughout as it kept the ball in Killeen territory for much of the game.

But despite getting 10 more shots on goal in the first half, the Lady Eagles had nothing to show for it until Olarte scored from five yards out after taking a pass from Guynn. Ellison added to its lead in the 57th minute as Guynn found the net, booting the ball past Killeen goalkeeper Victoria Walters.

Marbury ended the Lady Eagles scoring with a goal in the 67th minute.

"We held our own," Lady Roos head coach Richard Romeo said. "Last time we played them, the score was the same but the game wasn't. We're improving."

EHS returns to action at 6 p.m. Tuesday as it travels to face Waco La Vega while the Lady Roos play host to Waco University at 5:30 p.m at Buckley.
