Hailee Showers had something to prove to her father.
The Shoemaker junior had just six rebounds in the Lady Grey Wolves' loss to No. 8 Harker Heights on Tuesday night.
She didn't score, didn't have much of an impact at all. And after hearing about it from her mother, Shoemaker girls basketball coach Shauna Showers, Hailee heard it again from her father when she got home Tuesday night. "We came home after Tuesday and I knew I did a bad job, I knew I was going to hear it from him," Hailee Showers said. "He was very disappointed. We watched film for an hour and a half (Thursday) and he was
saying things and I was just getting mad. He was like, 'If I'm wrong, prove me wrong.'"
She did her best to do that Friday. The junior had a double-double by halftime and helped the Lady Grey Wolves win their first District 12-5A game this season, 69-44 over Bryan at home.
Kiara Rawls led the Lady Grey Wolves (8-10, 1-1) with 32 points and Showers finished with 18 points, 14 rebounds and three steals.
It was a win for Shoemaker, but the Lady Grey Wolves took very few steps forward after their 73-45 loss to Harker Heights. They turned the ball over 25 times, committed 21 fouls and were just 15-of-34 from the free-throw line.
"It was ugly and in district we'll take the win, but we're going to have to find a way to fine-tune something," Shauna Showers said. "To me, we did more things right tonight than we did against Harker Heights, but we still have those negative things that are haunting us."
Pensacola Watson led the Lady Vikings (2-12, 0-3) with nine points. Bryan committed 27 fouls, turned the ball over 31 times and the Lady Vikings' best offense in the first half was their free-throw shooting. They trailed 41-25 at the break, getting 13 points from the line on 13-of-20 shooting.
"We turned the ball over too much. You're not going to be able to turn the ball over 30-something times and win a ball game, it's not going to happen at the 5A level," Bryan coach Beth Jesurun said.
Hailee Showers scored 11 in the first half to go along with 12 rebounds, seven offensive, and the Lady Grey Wolves finished with 35 rebounds, 23 offensive, and scored 15 second-chance points.
"When we played Harker Heights, our rebounding was horrible," Shauna Showers said. "That's what I'm saying, 'Just pick something we're going to be good at and then everything else will come into that.'"
Rawls had 12 in the first quarter and 23 in the first half, leading Shoemaker to a 41-25 lead at the intermission.
The Lady Vikings trimmed Shoemaker's lead to 34-46 with three minutes to play in the third, but the Lady Grey Wolves finished the quarter on a 10-3 run, getting five points from Hailee Showers and four from Rawls.
"We're happy about the win, but we're disappointed in our play," Hailee Showers said. "We won this, but when we go to Belton (on Tuesday), we need play 10 times harder and make up for the mistakes we made."
