The Texas High School Coaches Association honored 16 area football players as being student-first student-athletes Tuesday on its Academic All-State Team.

Led by Lampasas' Elite selection Tate Stoneham, the Badgers combined with players from Copperas Cove, Ellison, Florence and Salado for one first team selection, eight second team and six honorable mention selections.

"Sometimes, I think that's more of an honor than all-district and other things just for the fact that it shows that not only are you a good person, a good player but you're very inteligent," said Lampasas athletic director Joey McQueen.

Stoneham, an all-district second-team center, was joined on the all-state list by teammates James Carter Burks, who was the area's only first-team selection, as well as second-teamers Cory Carpenter, James Lansford and Vann Millican.

Florence had four make the list. Shelby Bowers, Cody Ratliff, Brian Ross and David Shelton were all honorable mentions for the Buffaloes.

Salado and Ellison each had two make the list, including second-teamers Caleb Hayslip and Brandon Heller from Salado and Ross King from Ellison. Michael Knapp was also an honorable mention for Ellison.

Copperas Cove's Chris Barrick and Matthew Garrett were both selected to the second team and Sean Maier received honorable mention.

"It's direct correlation. If you're good in the classroom, you're going to be good on the football field," McQueen said. "And if you're lazy in the classroom, you'll be lazy on the football field."

Coaches submitted their nominees to the THSCA for consideration. Only seniors were allowed to be nominated but they must have maintained an overall grade point average of 92 for their first three years in high school and the first six weeks of their senior year. The requirements on the THSCA web-site also state the athlete must be in good standing with the team and of good moral character.
