Tuesday Roundup: Salado defeats Ducks, now 2nd in 25-3A

TAYLOR - When there were runners on, Trey Mohler found ways to bring them home.

Batting from the bottom of the lineup, Mohler came through with a two-run double in a five-run first inning and capped Salado's scoring with a two-out, two-run triple in the fifth to send the Eagles (15-10, 6-2 25-3A) into sole possession of second place in District 25-3A with an 8-2 victory Tuesday over Taylor.

Salado sophomore Britton Hawes notched the complete-game victory from the mound, striking out seven, while fellow sophomore Casey Frazier finished 2-for-3 at the plate.

San Angelo Lake View 8, Killeen 7 - At San Angelo, the Chiefs scored two runs in the bottom of the ninth inning to defeat the Roos.

Killeen (6-17-1, 1-8 8-4A) scored a go-ahead run in the top of the ninth inning following back-to-back singles, but was unable to hold on.

Temple 7, Shoemaker 2 - At Temple, Joe Joe Garcia and Brandon Gamboa both drove in a pair of runs in the sixth inning as the Wildcats rallied for a win over the Grey Wolves.

With the win, Temple (15-13, 8-4 12-5A) clinched a playoff spot. Eli Hilliard and Kyle Perez both had RBIs for Shoemaker (2-21-1, 0-12).

Bryan 11, Harker Heights 0, 5 inn. - At Bryan, Travis Gibson pitched five innings of no-hit baseball as the Knights' continued to struggle and were eliminated from the playoffs.

Zac Slaydon and Matt Muniz both drove in two runs for Bryan.

A&M Consolidated 4, Copperas Cove 0 - At College Station, Austin Ray pitched six shutout innings and struck out 14 Bulldawgs as the Tigers stayed in contention for the 12-5A title.

Consolidated (16-9, 9-3 12-5A) got RBIs for Ford Moore and Alec Pardowski. Copperas Cove's (9-17, 5-7) only hit was by Ty Johnson.

Robinson 15, Gatesville 5, 5 inn. - At Robinson, the Hornets' playoff hopes were dashed with a run-rule loss to the host Rockets.

Robinson hit five home runs and scored eight runs in the second and tacked on four more in the third and three in the fifth to seal the win.

Cullen Mayhew was 2-for-3 with two RBIs to lead Gatesville (17-8).

SOFTBALL

Temple 7, Harker Heights 0 - At Temple, Lexi Smith was almost perfect as the Tem-Cats kept pace with Bryan and A&M Consolidated in the race for the district title. Smith pitched her second consecutive no-hitter, this time shutting down the Lady Knights.

Sarah Truelove smacked two doubles and drove in two runs to aid in the win for Temple (15-6, 11-2 12-5A).

Robinson 14, Gatesville 1, 4 inn. - At Robinson, the Lady Rockets used an eight-run fourth inning to run-rule the Hornets.

Kendra Powell was 2-for-2 for Gatesville (15-11, 3-7 19-3A).

Cameron Yoe 15, Florence 4, 5 inn. - At Cameron, Chelsey Lansford had two hits, but the Lady Buffaloes finished the season winless.

Berenice Ramirez had the other hit for Florence (0-19, 0-14 27-2A).

Bryan 15, Shoemaker 0, 4 inn. - At Bryan, Hannah Parker, Reagan Boenker and Meagan Kraatz of the Lady Vikings all had triples in a blowout of the Lady Grey Wolves.

Brittney Jones had four RBIs for Bryan (24-4, 11-2 12-5A).

Monica Wickersham had the only hit for Shoemaker (1-19, 1-12).

TENNIS

Cove doubles ousted in 2nd round - At Waco, Copperas Cove girls doubles team Marisa Rinear and Sharon White were eliminated in the quarterfinals of the Region II-5A tennis tournament Tuesday at the Waco Regional Tennis Center.

White and Rinear lost 6-2, 6-2 to Round Rock Westwood's second-seeded Isabella Mozdzierz-Monico and Karen Vo. Mozdzierz-Monico was half of a state quarterfinalist pairing last season. The Westwood duo won three long deuce games in the second set to make the score more lopsided than it appeared. White and Rinear opened play with a 6-2, 6-0 win over Tyler Lee's Haley Belt and Casey Hadsall.

In girls singles, Alison Sprosty fell 6-0, 6-0 to Leander's Julie Muzy in the first round.

Belton didn't fare as well, losing both of its first-round matches. Jacob Daugherty lost 6-4, 2-6, 3-6 to Alex Tran of Garland Naaman Forest and the doubles team of Daniel Barron and Ryan Jones lost to Tyler Lee 7-6 (7-3), 6-3.
