If the Harker Heights Lady Knights hadn't been down a player - their leading goal scorer this season - the final 20 minutes of regulation, head girls soccer coach Royce Mitchel likes to think his team could've beaten Bryan on Tuesday at Leo Buckley Stadium.
So, without Bria Howard, who was red-carded shortly after scoring the game-tying goal, Mitchel will take the Lady Knights' 2-2 double-overtime tie with the Lady Vikings.
"This was actually a great result for us," Mitchel said. "We lost six varsity girls this week due to grades. Playing with a very makeshift team, we had to bring up quite a few JV girls and all of them performed very well today, especially going down 2-1, battling back (to) make it 2-2 and then getting a red card and playing a man down for the last 20 minutes (of regulation)."
Kacy Shea scored a go-ahead goal for Bryan (12-9-2, 3-7-2 12-5A) less than a minute into the second half, but Howard tied the game in the 55th minute. The Lady Vikings then couldn't take advantage when Heights was at a disadvantage following Howard's red card with 24:40 for sliding foot-first into Bryan goalkeeper Ana Meyer after Meyer had secured Howard's shot attempt.
Howard gave the Lady Knights (6-10-3, 2-8-2) a 1-0 lead on an assist from Samantha Hammonds with 10:28 left in the first half.
Less than a minute and a half later, Bryan's Saori Rosas tied the game with 9:05 left in the first half. Shea's goal with 54 seconds gone in the second half gave Bryan a 2-1 lead.
Robinson 2, Gatesville 1, 2OT - At Gatesville, Robinson scored the go-ahead goal with two minutes left to clinch District 34-4A's final girls playoff berth.
Veronica Cardenas tied the game for the Hornets (4-13, 1-10-1 34-4A) midway through the second half when she picked up her missed penalty kick and scored on the rebound.
Other girls scores:
Temple 8, Shoemaker 0
Gatesville 3, Robinson 2 - At Gatesville, the Hornets scored three goals in the second half to rally from a 2-0 deficit.
Franco Vega dished all three assists, including the game-winner to Jhovany Maldonado with eight minutes left to give Gatesville (7-11-1, 3-8-2 34-4A) a season sweep of the Rockets.
Abate Hennessy tied the game on a Vega's cross in the final 15 minutes, six minutes after scoring on Vega's corner kick 15 minutes into the second half.
Bryan 2, Harker Heights 0 - At Bryan, the Vikings just scored on opportunities the Knights never had.
Bryan (16-5-2, 9-2-1 12-5A) scored one goal in the middle of each half while the Knights (11-10, 7-5) lacked scoring chances in an otherwise evenly matched game.
A&M Consolidated 8, Copperas Cove 1 - At College Station, Anthony Gallick scored the lone goal for the Bulldawgs as Cove (2-12-1, 1-8-1 12-5A) struggled against district title-contending A&M Consolidated (13-5-3, 10-1-1)
Other boys scores:
Temple 2, Shoemaker 1
Waco Midway 4, Killeen 0
Heavy rains force several postponements
The storm system that moved into Central Texas late Monday night wreaked more havoc Tuesday.
The system that dropped more than five inches of rain on already saturated ground forced numerous baseball and softball cancellations and postponements.
Four area District 12-5A softball games and four 12-5A baseball games all had to be moved as well as all District 27-2A, 19-3A and 25-3A games.
Most teams plan to play today to make up the lost games, but field conditions are still being monitored to determine if they will be able to host games.
Softball games that were expected to be played today are Bryan at Shoemaker (5 p.m.) and Salado at Liberty Hill (5:30 p.m.), while Waco is set to play at Killeen at 6 p.m. Thursday and Copperas Cove plays in Belton at 1 p.m. Saturday.
Other games expected to be made up this week, but are not scheduled yet, are Burnet at Lampasas, Ellison at A&M Consolidated, Florence at Jarrell and Gatesville at Lorena.
Gatesville at Lorena baseball is expected to play at 6 p.m. today. Also, Belton visits Temple at 7 p.m., Shoemaker plays at A&M Consolidated (7 p.m.), Harker Heights plays at Ellison (7 p.m.) and Killeen plays at Waco University (7 p.m.)
Other games that could possibly be played today if field conditions improve are Salado at Liberty Hill, Florence at Jarrell and Copperas Cove at Bryan.
