Glynna Johnson led Gatesville with 20 kills and the fifth-ranked Hornets swept visiting Salado 25-18, 25-22, 25-23 on Friday.
Kaitlyn Poe had 34 assists, seven digs and three aces for Gatesville (23-2). Ashley Cook had three blocks and chipped in five kills and Megan Chambers tallied 16 digs in the win.
Ellison def. Temple 25-19, 27-25, 25-22 - At Ellison, the Lady Eagles spread the wealth, with three players, including Chelsea Grant, netting 11 kills each in the sweep.
Grant also led the team with four blocks. Malaysia Hope tallied 32 assists, her second straight game with more than 30.
Copperas Cove def. Shoemaker 25-3, 25-13, 25-15 - At Copperas Cove, the Lady Bulldawgs used a lopsided opening game to take control and sweep Shoemaker to start District 12-5A play.
Sophomore Qiana Canete had a team-high three blocks to go with nine kills for Cove (21-7), while Andrea Hurt led the way with 10 kills. Claire Taylor had 10 digs to go with a team-best four aces, while senior setter Amy Rosenbaum put up 32 assists.
Shoemaker, which has already nearly doubled its win total from 2010, fell to 11-9.
A&M Consolidated def. Harker Heights 25-5, 25-5, 25-17 - At A&M Consolidated, the Lady Knights were swept by the defending champs in their District 12-5A opener.
Blake Filip led Heights with 26 digs. Offensively, Harker Heights was paced by Anjana Janda and Starneisha Bodie with four and three kills, respectively. Janda also had three blocks while Deysia Burden chipped in with four. Ashley Osborne and Katie Schulte each contributed four assists in the loss.
Bryan def. Belton 20-25, 25-10, 25-17, 25-19 - At Bryan, Kaitlyn Dunahoo led the defeated Lady Tigers (4-17) with four aces and six kills in their 12-5A opener, while Alexis Dunning and Brieanne Brown added five kills each in the loss.
Maggie Kramer had a team-high 30 assists and chipped in nine digs, Kinsey Williams led Belton with 22 digs.
Lorena def. Lampasas 25-13, 25-10, 25-16 - At Lampasas, on a night where two Lady Badgers were on crutches and Tealey Farquhar gutted out an injury of her own, Lampasas was unable to mount any serious offensive threat.
Mikala Hirst stepped up with 17 digs, while Hailey Morrison led the Lady Badgers with 10 kills.
China Spring def. Killeen 29-27, 23-25, 25-19, 25-14 - At China Spring, Johlicia Williams had 10 kills and Mariah Shaw had five blocks for the defeated Lady Roos.
Bria McIver also played well, coming up with 29 digs. The assists leader for the Lady Roos was Esha Atkins with 24.
Thorndale def. Florence 17-25, 27-25, 25-13, 25-10 - At Thorndale, the Lady Buffaloes fell to 10-9 overall and 0-1 in district play.
