After losing a back-and-forth match with Gatesville, Copperas Cove watched Leander Vandegrift take care of the Hornets in the Lady Dawg Invitational championship.

The still-young Lady Vipers left an impression on the Lady Dawgs, knowing they would have to face them on the road less than two weeks later.

It was an impression, but Cove still took care of business, beating Leander Vandegrift 25-23, 8-25, 25-11, 25-16 Tuesday on the road.

The contributions came from everywhere for Cove, especially at the service line where Qiana Canete, Jessica Vick and Arielle Garcia tallied three aces each.

Canete added a team-high seven blocks and 10 kills, while senior setter Amy Rosenbaum had 43 assists to go with four blocks. Andrea Hurt led the way with 16 kills, while Claire Taylor 19 digs.

Shoemaker def. Little River-Academy, 25-18, 25-17, 21-25, 25-19 - At Little River, Hailee Showers had 14 kills, five digs and three blocks and the Lady Grey Wolves matched their season win total from a year ago with more than two weeks left before the start of District 12-5A.

Tearra Roberson had six kills, six digs and four blocks; Kiara Rawls had 14 assists, five kills and a block and junior varsity call-up sophomore Anessa Pitts added 11 assists for 6-4 Shoemaker.

The Lady Grey Wolves next take their up-start season to the Belton Tournament, where all 10 of the area schools, including 12-5A rivals Belton, Ellison and Harker Heights, will also be playing.

Florence def. Rosebud-Lott, 25-17, 29-27, 21-25, 25-11 - At Rosebud, Lauren Michalka led the way for the Lady Buffs, putting down 15 kills to go with 12 assists, 8 digs, 2 aces and 2 blocks.

Lauren Clark and Sam Miller took charge of the defense, finishing with 25 and 21 digs, respectively. Junior Haley Pluenneke added 26 kills for Florence, who play next at the Belton Invitational on Friday.

No. 11 Gatesville sweeps Groesbeck, Taylor in tri-match - At Gatesville, the 11th-ranked Hornets stretched their win streak to nine since a tournament championship loss with sweeping wins over Taylor and Groesbeck in a tri-match.

Gatesville, which lost to Leander Vandegrift 25-17, 25-22 in the Copperas Cove Tournament title match, next plays at the Belton Invitational on Friday looking for its second straight tournament win after winning its own tournament over the weekend.

Brownwood def. Lampasas, 25-21, 25-15, 25-19 - At Brownwood, Mikala Hirst tallied 34 digs and Hailey Morrison added nine kills as Lampasas dropped its second match in a row.
