The Gatesville Lady Hornets started off the district 7-3A in blowout fashion, defeating Whitney 11-1 in five innings Wednesday at Gatesville High.

Emily Leib was again stellar in the win. The senior pitched all five innings, struck out eight and only surrendered two hits.

Whitney's lone run was due to a throwing error by the Lady Hornets.

Gatesville (17-6 overall, 1-0 in District 7-3A) opened up the game in the second with a double by Cassie Morphet and RBI singles by Shelby Watson, Lauren Nichols and Paige Chambers.

Chambers went 3-for-4 and drove in two runs and Allison Aslin was 2-for-2 with a double and a run.

Gatesville plays Hillsboro on Tuesday.

Academy 10, Salado 5 – At Salado, runs and base running mistakes cost the Lady Eagles as they lost their first district game to Lexington.

Salado's Cameryn Bintz singled and drove in Kori Norman and Rachel Piatt in the third and Isabell Berumen and Jordan Svadlenak had RBI singles in the fifth and sixth innings respectively.

Mindi Dunahoo scored the final Lady Eagle run when she singled and then scored on an error in the seventh.

Salado 4, Academy 0 – At Salado, Trent Wagnon pitched a complete game, struck out four and shut out the visiting Bumblebees.

"The defense did a good job behind him," said Salado coach Melvin Bates. "There was one inning where they made a couple of errors, but they made a double play and kind of made up for it."

Salado (9-4, 1-1) scored all the runs it needed in the first inning. Paul Warren drove in Cole Calder with an RBI single and then Tayler Laughland and Bubba Luna followed with two more RBI singles.

In the second, Wagnon provided himself with one more insurance run when he singled and scored on a Calder sacrifice fly.

Salado plays next at Killeen on Friday at 1 p.m.

Lexington 6, Florence 3 – At Lexington, the Buffaloes allowed five unearned runs and fell to the Eagles.

Ben Futrell had an RBI triple and Garrett Daniels has two hits and two RBI.
