Cove National Night Out

McGruff the Crime Dog gives out hugs to children Saturday, Sept. 29, 2018, during the 21st annual National Night Out Kick Off party in Copperas Cove.

An event designed to promote safety and reduce crime nationwide will be celebrated in the Killeen area Tuesday.

National Night Out block parties will be held in Killeen, Harker Heights, Copperas Cove and at Fort Hood.

The purpose of the event, according to a news release from the Copperas Cove Police Department, is to:

1) heighten crime and drug prevention awareness; 2) generate support for, and participation in, local anti-crime programs; 3) strengthen neighborhood spirit and police-community partnership; and 4) send a message to the criminals letting them know that neighborhoods are organized and fighting back.

Residents are encouraged to lock their doors, turn on outside lights, and spend the evening outside with neighbors and police. Suggestions for block parties and gatherings include cookouts, flashlight walks, contests, youth activities and anti-crime and drug rallies.

This is the 36th annual observance of National Night Out. Locally, the Killeen Police Department has been part of the event for 23 years, while the Copperas Cove Police Department has been encouraging participation for 22 years.

The Copperas Cove Police Department will also be hosting a National Night Out Kick Off Party from 6 to 8:30 p.m. tonight in the city’s downtown area. Hotdogs, chips, cookies, popcorn, ice cream, and soft drinks will be served. There will be many activities for children and adults, as well as door prizes throughout the evening. Some of the events are at no charge and others are priced at only 25 cents each.

McGruff the Crime Dog, Eddie Eagle, and H-E-Buddy will all also be at the party in Cove event tonight. An impaired driving peddle-cart course donated by State Farm will be unveiled during the event. The goal of the impairment course is to teach about the dangers of driving impaired.
