Gift givers wanting to get a jump start on their Christmas shopping or those wanting to know where they can shop local will soon have their chance.

The Harker Heights Chamber of Commerce is hosting a neighborhood block party for vendors from 2 to 6:30 p.m. Tuesday in Market Heights, located in the parking lot by Razzoo’s Cajun Cafe at 201 E. Central Texas Expressway.

The event allows consumers to know what to expect for Small Business Saturday, which is Nov. 29, said Teri Stermer, chamber business development director.

“We’re doing it as a preview because the chamber is not open on Saturdays, but this allows our members to promote their business in a central location so people can come to their locations that Saturday,” Stermer said.

This is the first year for the chamber to host the preview event, though Small Business Saturday originated in 2010 with American Express, she said.

There will be gift cards, bags and prizes from American Express on Tuesday.

“All vendors take American Express to participate,” Stermer said.

Chamber members get to participate for free, and vendors who participated in the Harker Heights Farmers Market also can have a free space.

Nonmembers also can join with a $100 fee to set up a booth.

The event allows participants to set up a table to promote their business, with the option of selling items.

“The day encourages people to shop at our local businesses on the Saturday after Thanksgiving,” Stermer said.

Interested participants should call the chamber at 254-699-4999 by Friday to participate.
