Harker Heights' La Princeton Dixon (2) throws over Waco’s Ivan Chappell after taking a bad snap Thursday at Leo Buckley Stadium.

La Princeton Dixon guided Harker Heights to an overtime win against Ellison. Then, he emerged from an even closer contest to be named KDHpressbox.com Player of the Week.

The Knights quarterback helped engineer a comeback victory against the crosstown rival Eagles by accounting for the game-tying points late in the fourth quarter before an overtime field goal carried Harker Heights to a 24-21 victory.

On the final possession of regulation, Dixon capped off the drive with 34 consecutive rushing yards, including a 4-yard carry into the end zone, and he followed with a successful 2-point conversion pass to Jaron Millender, tying the score 21-21 with three seconds remaining in regulation.

The production allowed Knights kicker Jaime Vargas to clinch the outcome with a 33-yard field goal in overtime, and Dixon finished with 54 rushing yards in the win.

But the voting was even closer.

A single vote made the difference as Dixon received 195 of the 403 votes cast in this week’s poll, narrowly beating out Shoemaker receiver Trent Hudson.

En route to a 52-28 victory against Killeen, Hudson recorded a pair of touchdowns — one in the first and one in the third quarter —and the efforts garnered 194 votes.

Salado senior running back Hunter Turk and Belton receiver Luke Bramlett rounded out the nominees.

Turk ran for 128 yards, including a 68-yard touchdown, in a 31-28 win against then-Class 4A, Division II No. 8 Robinson, and Bramlett caught three passes for 100 yards as the Tigers lost 66-34 to Temple.
