Copperas Cove and Killeen will reignite their rivalry tonight at Leo Buckley Stadium, and they will have more on the line than just pride.
Along with capturing bragging rights for the next year, each is looking to earn its first District 12-6A victory.
The Bulldawgs (1-2) and Kangaroos (0-3) were unsuccessful in last week’s district openers, falling to Belton (1-2) and Waco Midway (1-2), respectively.
The Tigers will look to build on the momentum at home against Harker Heights. The Knights (0-3) are coming off a 37-3 loss against Temple (2-1).
The Wildcats are set to host Shoemaker (1-1) in its district opener after receiving an early bye last week.
Waco (0-3) has a bye tonight.
Elsewhere in the area, Lampasas aims to bounce back after losing their state ranking following last week’s 31-30 defeat against Lorena at home.
The Badgers (2-1) host La Vernia with revenge on their minds after the Bears won a regular-season encounter and eliminated Lampasas from the playoffs in the area round last year. Additionally, La Vernia (2-1) ended Lampasas’ previous postseason appearance in the 2011 area round.
In other action, Gatesville (0-3) welcomes Class 4A, Division II No. 3 Waco Connally (3-0), Florence (0-3) hosts Academy (0-3) in its homecoming game and Salado (2-1) travels to play Taylor (0-3).
All games begin at 7:30 p.m.
The battle among the top of the District 12-6A standings continues as Ellison hosts Midway. The Lady Eagles come into the match with a 5-1 record, while the Pantherettes are tied for first place with an unblemished 5-0 record.
Belton is also taking a 5-0 record into its home match against Harker Heights (1-4), and fourth-place Copperas Cove (3-2) looks to snap a three-match losing skid as it travels to Killeen (0-5).
Shoemaker (2-3) plays at Temple (3-3) to round out the district schedule. Waco (0-6) is on a bye.
Elsewhere in the area, Gatesville attempts to upset Class 4A No. 15 Liberty Hill in a home match.
All matches will begin at 5:30 p.m.
Ellison, Copperas Cove and Harker Heights will each take part in the Waco Invitational at the Heart of Texas Soccer Complex. Races begin at 8 a.m.
