Harker Heights' Terrance Carter (10) finds a blocker and keeps the ball for short yardage against Temple during their District 12-6A opener Friday at Leo Buckley Stadium.

Several area football teams enter tonight still searching for their first victory of the year.

A month into the season, Harker Heights, Gatesville and Florence are each 0-4 and looking to end the skids.

The Knights, who are 0-2 in District 12-6A, host Killeen (1-3, 1-1) on the heels of the Kangaroos’ first taste of victory after beating Copperas Cove 37-34 last week.

In Gatesville, the Hornets put their 16-game win streak against visiting Lampasas (3-1) on the line.

The Badgers beat La Vernia 48-28 last week to avenge a playoff loss to the Bears in the 2018 area round, but they have not defeated Gatesville since 1980.

Florence has scored seven or fewer points three times this season, including a 56-7 loss to Academy last week, but the Buffaloes could see more offense tonight, traveling to play winless Johnson City LBJ.

Locally, Ellison (1-3, 1-1) intends to build on the momentum created last week after narrowly falling to Waco Midway in double overtime as it plays at Copperas Cove, where the Bulldawgs (1-3, 0-2) hope to collect their first district win.

Salado rounds out the evening’s action by taking its 3-1 record to Class 4A, Division II No. 2 Waco Connally (4-0).

Each game starts at 7:30 p.m.

Ellison travels to Copperas Cove, where sole possession of third place in the district standings will be on the line. Each team enters with a 5-2 record.

In other District 12-6A action, Belton (6-1) will look to bounce back from its first district loss at Shoemaker. The Lady Grey Wolves (4-3) are fifth in the district standings — one game behind the Lady Eagles and Lady Bulldawgs.

With matching 1-6 district records, Killeen travels to Harker Heights with the winner claiming sole possession of seventh place.

All three matches start at 5:30 p.m.

Elsewhere, Lampasas hosts Salado at 6 p.m. in each team’s District 27-4A opener, while Florence travels to play Johnson City LBJ at 6 p.m.
