The Ellison Eagles closed out the Killeen ISD Winter Soccer Showcase with a 2-0 victory over China Spring on Saturday.

The final day of the showcase started an hour later than scheduled due to cold temperatures. The morning matches were played with 35-minute halves instead of 40.

Waco University’s Purple team, made up of varsity players, beat Killeen 4-0. University’s White squad, made up of both varsity and junior varsity players, took a 3-0 win over Copperas Cove.

Harker Heights played Brownwood to start the afternoon session, with the game ending in a scoreless draw.

The Knights did not allow a goal in their three Showcase matches.

Ellison’s match against China Spring was scoreless after one half.

Goalkeeper Frank Evans recorded three saves.

The Eagles brought in goalie Sam Morrall for the second half and he recorded three saves of his own.

China Spring goalkeeper Dustin White stopped four of the Eagles’ attempted shots in the half.

“We just weren’t willing to shoot and were holding onto the ball too much,” Ellison head coach Niles Dunnells said.

In the 75th minute, senior Marcell Wright sent a shot past White to put the Eagles up 1-0.

It only took 35 seconds for Ellison senior Keondre Taylor to follow with a goal of his own, giving the Eagles a 2-0 lead.

“When Marcell finally took that first shot,” Dunnells said, “I think that finally let us relax and that second one came there.

“We have the capabilities of getting into the offensive third, but until we start taking shots, we’re not going to score.”

As the sun set and the winds calmed over Leo Buckley Stadium, Shoemaker closed out the showcase against Austin Achieve and lost 3-0.

Montez Burt had a couple of good chances in the first half for Shoemaker, but sent both over the goal.

Achieve’s Carlos Silva snuck a shot in the upper left corner of the net just out of reach of goalie Xavier Berger putting the Polar Bears ahead 1-0 in the 34th minute.

“When we play and do things that we’re supposed to do, we do really well,” Shoemaker head coach Greg Jordan said, “Unfortunately, we have a tendency to forget to do our job and fall back to bad habits we brought in with us.”

The crowd cheered as Berger kept Achieve from scoring in the 46th minute.

Shoemaker continued to fight throughout the second half but Achieve added two more scores for the final margin.

“Our marking was less than acceptable,” Jordan said. “Though they didn’t get a lot of opportunities, the shots that they scored on us were all unmarked and we need to fix that.”

Jordan has a fairly young team made up of mostly sophomores, two freshmen and three seniors.

“I need them to stay focused,” Jordan said. “We’re going to work on everybody knowing their job and knowing their job the whole time, not worried about the scoreboard or what everybody else is doing, but doing their job.

“If we do that we should be good and competitive for district.”
