Florence-Jarrell football

Play is delayed in Jarrell as an injured Florence player is tended to on Friday night.

JARRELL — Derrick Warren scored four touchdowns and the Jarrell Cougars rolled to a 41-14 victory over Florence on Friday.

Both teams came into Week 2 looking for their first wins of the season in the Class 3A nondistrict matchup.

Quarterback Dylan Tamplen scored both Florence touchdowns on runs in the first half.

The Buffaloes got things going with a lengthy keeper by Tamplen that quickly moved them into Cougars territory. Aric Grimm got in on the action with some tough carries in the opening drive before Tamplen punched it in on a quarterback sneak at the goal line with 6:42 left in the first quarter.

The Cougars quickly answered on their first drive with a 75-yard TD run by Derrick Warren. The Cougars attempted to try some swinging gate trickery on the extra point, but failed and trailed 7-6 with 5:46 left in the first.

The Cougars stopped the Buffaloes on a fourth-and-7 attempt on the Cougars 47 and got back to work on offense with a strong dose of Warren, including a run of 16 yards into Buffalo territory.

The Cougars began the second quarter on the Florence 13 and quarterback Aden Edgar scored on a 5-yard keeper to put Jarrell on top 12-7 with 11:22 left in the half. The two-point try up the middle was stuffed by the Florence defense, but the Cougars never trailed again.

The Buffaloes moved back into Cougars territory but a botched option attempt between Tamplen and Grimm led to a turnover near midfield.

Heron Rodriguez completed a screen pass to Warren who got loose for a 50-yard gain for the Cougars. Warren punched it in from a foot away on a draw with 6:59 left in the second quarter.

Rodriguez took in the QB keeper for the two-point conversion to give the Cougars a 20-7 lead.

With less than 2 minutes remaining in the half, Tamplen kept for 20 yards to get the Buffaloes into the red zone. Tamplen finished the drive by punching it for a 3-yard TD on the next play with 1:34 left.

Angel Perez converted the extra point to cut the Cougars lead to 20-14.

Warren returned the second-half kickoff 32 yards to the Florence 38, then finished the quick drive with a 3-yard run with 9:46 left in the third quarter. The Cougars added another two-point conversion to push their lead to 28-14.

Tamplen and Grimm helped Florence move the ball inside the Jarrell 25. The game was then delayed when the Buffaloes' Colby Mathews was injured and taken to a hospital. After play resumed, Florence was stopped on fourth down near the Cougars 20.

Rodriguez led a two-play TD drive with a long strike to Joseph Crathers followed by a screen pass to Warren to put Cougars up 34-14 with 1:34 left in the third.

In the fourth quarter, Tamplen was picked off on fourth-and-goal, setting up a 91-yard TD run by Crathers with 5:52 remaining.

Jesus Perez kicked the extra point to cap the scoring.
