BRYAN — For the fourth season in a row, the Lometa boys basketball team fell victim to a tough playoff draw, falling 88-77 to No. 12 Chireno in the area-round of the Class 1A playoffs on Friday.

The Hornets, ranked 19th, have lost to a top-15 team in the area round in each of the last four seasons.

Senior Kyle Molter scored 29 points to lead the Hornets in his final game. Senior Ivan Jasso added 21 and topped the 1,000 mark for his career, finishing with 1,018.

Adrian Rivera also reached double figures with 12 points for Lometa (25-4).

The difference Friday was a 25-13 second-quarter run by Chireno.

“They’ve got a lot of offensive threats and we couldn’t get stops when we needed them,” Lometa coach Aaron Nuckles said.

That left the Hornets forced to foul down the stretch, and Chireno finished 23 of 30 at the foul line.

The Hornets’ other three losses were to No. 13 Waelder and playoff teams in Class 2A and 3A.

Lometa loses District 25-1A MVP Jasso and first-teamers Reid Moore and Molter, but returns junior Adrian Rivera, the district’s offensive MVP who led the Hornets in scoring, rebounding and blocks.

Sixth-man Connell Barnett, a second-teamer, and junior Carlos Perez, a first-teamer, will also be back to help the Hornets try for their fifth straight district championship.

Earning 25-1A honorable mention for Lometa were juniors Graham Bradley and Josh Castruita, and sophomores Ryan Davidson and Pedro Almaguer.
