Media Account Representative

Killeen Daily Herald

I have been employed at the Killeen Daily Herald for over twenty-five years now.

Obviously I have witnessed many changes throughout the years, to include three general managers, three business managers, several advertising directors, a plethora of classified managers, countless sales representatives and a slew of other departmental employees.

The nature of the business, as well as my functionality, has also changed throughout the years. When I first arrived at the Killeen Daily Herald in 1989, I was informed by co-workers who preceded me that, the current building had superseded the downtown location not many years prior. Other than the burnt-orange trim around the advertising, business and circulation departments, little has changed cosmetically about the building; even the carpet remains the same.

My job title and functionality then was that of an Inside Classified Sales Representative.

The focus of my job at that time was Classified “line ads” and “display ads” and the occasional special section; the most important one at that time for the Classified Department was the annual Roll of Honor. There were three of us (Classified Sales Reps.) who sat at desks contiguous to the front counter. There were about four Outside Classified Sales Reps. and probably four Outside Retail Sales Reps at that time.

Back then, the internet was just coming of age and digital technology would soon make many things obsolete. Gone would be the days of cut and paste graphics and pagination. I too would have to adapt to the changing technology and the new and diversified demands placed upon the newly designated “Media Sales Representative”.

After a brief stint in 2002 as a Recruitment Account Representative, these compartmentalized specialist designations would gradually evolved into the all encompassing “Media Sales Representative”. The Media Sales Representative would be responsible for selling a myriad of products to include: print advertising products such as the Killeen Daily Herald, the Ft. Hood Herald, the Cove Herald, the Harker Heights Herald; specialty magazines like Homefinder, Tex Appeal, Health & Fitness, etc.; a variety of annual special pages and special sections to include Newcomers Guide and Progress Edition; then there’s commercial print products such as flyers, inserts and vinyl banners; and of course the digital advertising products from online banner ads to digital images of print ads and more.

Through it all, I’m still learning and still developing my craft and more importantly my character.
