A Coryell County grand jury in August returned an indictment against a Copperas Cove woman after police said she struck a 7-year-old girl, leaving “raised, red marks” on her body last year.

Brittney Wade-Jones, 33, is facing a charge of injury to a child with reckless bodily injury. She was released from jail on a $5,000 bond, according to the Coryell County Sheriff’s Department.

Killeen police responded to an elementary school on Oct. 5, 2018, to assist Child Protective Services with a child who allegedly had been injured, according to the arrest affidavit.

The girl complained to her teacher of having face and eye pain, and when asked what happened she told the teacher that Wade-Jones “struck her with a belt because she didn’t spell words correctly,” police said.

The officer said he could see a 5-inch long red mark on the girl’s forehead and similar marks on her back and arm. The girl “spoke of being struck with the belt on her arm, back and chest while at home,” which was located in the 1800 block of South Farm-to Market 116 in Copperas Cove, according to the affidavit.

Wade-Jones told police that she intended to give the girl “a whooping with a belt” on her behind for yelling at her teacher and for bad grades, police said. She said that the girl twisted her body and raised her arm while she was trying to administer the punishment, causing other injuries, according to the affidavit.
