Equine therapy

Patrons of Pet Supermarket in Killeen were treated with a spectacle Saturday. Outside the pet store were three ponies decorated with multi-colored sequins and even a tutu.

The ponies were from the Horsin Around Recovery Ranch. Brenda Ramos, founder of the nonprofit organization, said it was holding its first fundraiser Saturday.

“All the proceeds go to soldiers with PTSD and kids with special needs,” Ramos said.

The recovery ranch specializes in equine therapy, which is designed for people with disabilities to make a connection with an animal and to find peace.

“It’s really helped me to stay positive and stay motivated,” Ramos said.

Even some of the recovery ranch’s volunteers feel the effects.

Julie Hanson said the animals probably help them more than they help the animals.

“It’s just so calming to be around them,” Hanson said.

The recovery ranch is located at 14138 State Highway 195 in Killeen and offers free therapy to soldiers and first responders.
